HCIAS Academic Programs
The HCIAS ACADEMIC PROGRAMS IN INTERDISCIPLINARY IBERO-AMERICAN STUDIES incorporate converging perspectives from the social sciences, humanities, cultural studies, behavioral studies, and environmental studies.
The HCIAS MASTER'S PROGRAM critically examines the current social, political, economic, and environmental debates in Ibero-America by studying their reflection in social and public communication. Our students reflect on questions such as: How are social movements in Ibero-America debated? How can sustainable development address environmental crises? How does migration shape the social and cultural landscapes of Ibero-America? How does political change impact Ibero-American societies? How does the media shape public opinion in Ibero-America?
The HCIAS STRUCTURED DOCTORAL PROGRAM offers a three- to four-year framework for pursuing a doctorate in Ibero-American Studies. It supports young researchers in strengthening their academic and professional skills, gaining scientific independence, building international networks and shaping a distinct academic profile. A thematic doctoral research group further enables early-career scholars to address key challenges in Ibero-American societies, with a focus on communication dynamics.
MASTER'S PROGRAM
The HCIAS MASTER'S PROGRAM critically examines the current social, political, economic, and environmental debates in Ibero-America by studying their reflection in social and public communication. With specialized knowledge from a wide range of disciplines, from the humanities to the social sciences, students develop a holistic understanding of Ibero-America. They also benefit from a highly international study environment, with classes taught in English and Spanish. Additionally, the program offers a flexible curriculum, integrating a mobility window that enables students to develop their profile for careers inside or outside academia.
Doctoral Program
The HCIAS Structured Doctoral Program provides a comprehensive framework for pursuing a doctorate in Ibero-American Studies. It is designed to support young researchers to deepen their research, academic, and professional skills, develop scientific independence, and build a unique academic profile over the course of three to four years. We partner with the Heidelberg Graduate Academy and the Heidelberg Center Latin America in Santiago de Chile to enable our doctoral students in building networks and becoming part of a vibrant, international research community.
The thematic doctoral research group “Communication and Society in Ibero-America” is integrated in the HCIAS structured doctoral program. Established in 2021/2022 with the support of the Landesgraduiertenförderung of Baden-Württemberg (LGF), the group brings together doctoral projects that address the contemporary challenges in Ibero-America, with a special focus on social and communication dynamics.
Courses for B.A. students
While the HCIAS does not offer an independent B.A. program, we are involved in undergraduate teaching at Heidelberg University. Each semester, our professors organize courses that are open to B.A. students and address topics relevant to the macroregion of Ibero-America. These courses invite students to explore the cultural, historical, political, and social dimensions of the region, offering valuable perspectives that complement their degree studies and broaden their academic horizons.
