Francisco Moreno-Fernández, sociolinguist, Alexander von Humboldt Professor, and director of the Heidelberg Center for Ibero-American Studies (HCIAS), upon nomination by linguists Peter Trudgill and Ernst Håkon Jahr, has been elected as a new member of the Academia Europaea.

The Academia Europaea was established in 1988 and is a non-governmental, pan-European association of humanities, letters, and sciences. Its main objective is to support educational, academic, and scientific advancements that benefit society as a whole.

The members of the Academia Europaea come from all over Europe and are eminent scholars in the natural sciences, medicine, social sciences, and the humanities. They are elected upon nomination by fellow members.

The academy’s activities, which include various awards, events, and publications, aim to promote excellence in interdisciplinary research and education at the European level, as well as advise national and international institutions on scientific matters.

Francisco Moreno-Fernández will join the activities of the Academia Europaea in its section of linguistic studies.
