Centro de Estudos Galegos Día das Letras Galegas: Movie Screening 'Dorothé na Vila'

We are pleased to invite you to the screening of the documentary Dorothé na Vila, a moving and beautifully crafted film that retraces the legacy of Swiss musicologist Dorothé Schubarth, who arrived in Galicia in the late 1970s in search of ancient songs that had already vanished from central Europe. Her journey led to over 300 hours of recordings, forming the Cancioneiro Popular Galego — one of the most significant collections of traditional music from the Iberian Peninsula. Forty years later, two young filmmakers follow in Schubarth’s footsteps, hoping to find the voices she once recorded and uncover the life stories behind them. This beautiful documentary presents us with the stories of the "cantareiras", who are honored on the Día das Letras Galegas 2025 as carriers of Galician oral history and identity.
