In June 1961, around 60 students from the former Portuguese colonies secretly fled Portugal, where they were staying. Among them were the former presidents of Capo Verde and Mozambique, Pedro Pires and Joaquim Chissano, as well as the former prime ministers of Angola and Mozambique, Fernando Van Dunen and Pascoal Mocumbi. The aim was to escape repression by the political police of the Portuguese dictatorship (PIDE), to evade military mobilization or to join liberation movements.
