About Us Charlotte Blattner
Dr. Charlotte Blattner is a postdoctoral researcher at the Observatory of Spanish in Europe (OSE), where she leads the research project „Kommunikative Sprachpraktiken des Spanischen im europäischen Migrationskontext“. Her project is funded by the Baden-Württemberg Stiftung through the programme “The Research Workshop – Your Idea for Tomorrow”.
Charlotte Blattner received her PhD from Heidelberg University in 2026 with the distinction summa cum laude. Her doctoral dissertation examined the role of the family in the intergenerational transmission of Spanish as a heritage language. During her doctoral studies, she was awarded scholarships from the German National Academic Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes) and the Baden-Württemberg State Graduate Funding Programme, and she was a member of the doctoral research group “Communication and Society in Ibero-America” at the Heidelberg Center for Ibero-American Studies (HCIAS). Her dissertation was supervised by Prof. Dr. Óscar Loureda and Prof. Dr. Francisco Moreno-Fernández.
She is co-editor of the publication series Special Series 3: Working Papers of the OSE and has served as an associated researcher at the Observatorio Nebrija del Español at Universidad Nebrija, as well as a member of the scientific evaluation committee of the journal Colindancias. From 2021 to 2026, she worked as a research associate at HCIAS, coordinating DAAD-funded international study programmes, including binational double master’s degrees developed in cooperation with the University of Salamanca and the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Additionally, she holds a Master’s degree in Translation Studies from Heidelberg University.

Research
Dr. Charlotte Blattner’s research examines Spanish as a migration, heritage, and foreign language in European migration societies at the intersection of sociolinguistics, migration studies, and multilingualism research. Her work focuses on the analysis of communicative practices, language ideologies, and intergenerational transmission processes in order to better understand complex configurations of multilingualism, integration, and social belonging from a comparative perspective.
Charlotte studied Translation Studies with German, Spanish, and French at Heidelberg University, and completed several academic stays in Spain as part of her studies.
