About Us Ângela Figueiredo

Visiting Scholar

Prof. Dr. Ângela Figueiredo is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the Universidade Federal do Recôncavo da Bahia (UFRB), Brazil. She is hosted by the HCIAS in September and October 2026. Her visit is funded by a fellowship within the International Guest Professorship program of Heidelberg University’s Excellence Strategy. She holds a PhD in Sociology from IUPERJ/Sociedade Brasileira de Instrução and has completed postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Virginia and the University of California, Berkeley. Her research explores the intersections of race, gender, class, identity, and knowledge production in Brazil and the broader African diaspora. 

Dr. Figueiredo is an internationally renowned sociologist and her pioneering work on Black feminist thought, race relations, and decolonial social theory has positioned her as a leading voice in Afro-Latin American studies. At UFRB, she teaches at the Centre for Arts, Humanities and Letters (CAHL) and is a permanent member of the Graduate Programme in Social Sciences (PPGCS). 

During her stay at the HCIAS, she will contribute to dialogue between Latin American and European approaches to critical social research, with particular attention to community-based and participatory methods and the experiences and perspectives of Black and Indigenous populations.
